Step 1: Check for Wires and Pipes

Before removing the damaged wall area, you will want to watch for obstructions, such as wiring or piping. If you see obstructions like these, simply work around them with a drywall saw.

Step 2: Insert Backer Boards

You will want to cut the backer boards roughly 4 inches longer than the hole’s height. Any type of softwood will work. Remember to hold them securely to the backside of the drywall while fastening them in.

Step 3: Tape the Joints

Then lay a 1/8-inch-thick bed patch of drywall compound over the joints and push the paper tape into the compound with a flexible knife. After that, apply a thin layer of the compound on the tape and allow it to dry as you continue your work.

Step 4: Apply A Second and Third Coat of Compound

Following that, you can apply a second and third coat of compound over it, drawing it at least 6 inches beyond the edge of the initial coat to help taper the edges. Let the compound fully dry between coats.

Step 5: Sand the Dry Compound

Then remove the leftover ridges by sanding the dry compound with 100-grit sandpaper and blending the edges.

Step 6: Repaint the Wall

And finally, you can prime and paint the wall. Unfortunately, this step requires knowing the specific shade of paint on your wall. Fortunately, if you do not know what the type of paint is or where to find it, you can call up the professional painters at Wet Paint LLC to help, and they can take care of all your painting needs.
