Before painting or repainting a room, it is critical to ensure the walls you are painting are in good shape. One of the important steps to take for this is to repair any issues with the drywall before painting. In this blog, we’ll discuss how to do this, specifically for popped nailheads, including the tools you’ll need in order to make these repairs yourself.
Tools Needed
Before starting to repair your drywall, you’ll want to ensure that you have all of the tools necessary to do the job properly. In order to do this, you’ll need spackle, a putty knife, nails or drywall screws, sandpaper, and a hammer. A drill may also be helpful. You’ll also want to be aware of the humidity and temperature of the room you are painting. This will affect the amount of time needed to dry the spackle before you can paint.
Steps To Repair Popped Nail Heads
Below are the steps you can take to repair popped nail heads drywall before painting a room:
Check the Area
Before starting, check the area you are planning on painting. You’ll want to inspect all areas that need repaired and make a mental note of where they are.
Secure the Drywall
After determining which areas need fixed, the first thing to do is to drive a nail or screw just above the popped nail head, about 1.5 inches above is a good distance. This will reattach the drywall to the stud. You’ll want to ensure the head of the nail or screw is sunken into the drywall so that it can be completely hidden.
Use the Nail
You’ll then want to drive the popped nail in more, so that it, too, can be covered totally.
Cover and Smooth
Once done, you can cover both the original, popped nail and the “anchoring” nail with spackle. The idea is to get this level with the surface of the wall. You can make it level by scraping with a putty knife. Once this is dry, you can sand down any excess putty, which can also help to smooth the surface to make for a great paint job.
